Yesterday, First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to thousands of volunteers to applaud their efforts and encourage them to continue serving their country. Her speech and appearance in San Francisco was one of many administration efforts to unveil the new "United We Serve" program. The volunteer campaign officially kicked off yesterday and encourages Americans to get out and serve in their communities this summer.
The First Lady told conference attendees, "You're the movers and the shakers. You've done everything in your power to make giving back cool again."
The service initiative will continue until September 11th. The 8th anniversary of the terrorist attacks will be honored with a new National Day of Service in recognition of those who lost their lives. The administration believes that volunteering and service can help support economic recovery efforts. Four key issues areas have been targeted for sustained volunteer work: education, health, energy and the environment and community renewal.
Obama was one of the keynote speakers at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service being held in San Francisco. Earlier in the day, the First Lady, along with California First Lady Maria Shriver, helped build a playground at a San Francisco elementary school.
On my blog, The Fabulous Giver, I launched a "Summer of Service" campaign last week. Every Tuesday, I've committed to posting outdoor volunteer opportunities for the upcoming week. If you have an opportunity that you would like to share, please email me at thefabgiver@gmail.com.
