Continuing on the theme of socks, I recently purchased a set of 6" multi-colored laminated birch Harmony wood double pointed needles from Knit Picks. This gorgeous set of wood needles has been created using the most common sock knitting sizes and packaged in a vinyl case with a secure snap closure. Each needle size is labeled on the packaging so you can see the sizes at a quick glance. The beauty of this set, they have included one extra needle per size in the event of an accident or loss of one of the DPNs. What other company does that? This set includes sizes US Size 0 (2.00mm) ,US Size 1 (2.25mm), US Size 1 (2.50mm),US Size 2 (2.75mm), US Size 2 (3.00mm) and US Size 3 (3.25mm).
Harmony wood needles provide knitters with a luxury that only wood needles provide. They are smooth in texture, yarn glides easily from one needle to the next and they are easy to care for. I have joined the sock knitting enthusiast that have been an avid users of bamboo needles and have stashed them away in order to use nothing but Harmony needles.
If you find that your Harmony needles or other wood double pointed needles, are getting slightly worn or dull at the ends, you can simply sharpen them with a nail file. I do not suggest using a pencil sharpener as you may cause splintering. I do however suggest that if you use a nail file to sharpen, lightly buff with a soft nail buff. This will help smooth out any roughness that sharpening might have caused. Many knitters have used a glass nail file and have found that using this file gives a great tip to their needles. Make sure to store your wood double pointed needles away from heat, cold and direct sunlight.
If you decide to purchase a set of these wonderful needles, I promise you you will not go back to bamboo and definitely will for go metal needles all together.
