The House of Representatives passed H.R. 3962, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, late Saturday night by a vote of 220-215.
Whether the bill will become law remains uncertain, however.
The Senate will first vote on its own version of a health care bill. If that passes, the two bills will have to be reconciled into one legislative document and voted on again by the House and the Senate, and then President Obama would sign it.
In the end, 219 Democrats voted for the health care reform bill, and 39 voted against it.
Rep. Joe Cao (R-Louisiana), who was elected in December into a Democratic New Orleans district, was the only Republican who voted in favor of the bill.
