Take it easy on the Lunchables or risk bowel cancer, say researchers at the World Cancer Research Fund. The organization warns that years of eating too much processed meat, such as smoked ham, can lead to increased risk of certain cancers.
While the curing process can introduce carcinogenic substances to meat, the larger danger is probably posed by obesity. If children eat ham veryday, they develop a taste for processed meat, which is often high in fat and calories. The Research Fund recommends substituting unprocessed meat or fish, or better yet, more vegetables.
