Swear jar
Swear jars may be a thing of the past

In a bit of academic fun, British scientists have found that cursing can help you endure pain.

Researchers had study participants stick their hand into a bucket of ice water, then repeat either a curse word of their choice or a more innocuous word. The foul-mouthed participants were able to keep their hand in the freezing water for nearly 50% longer than those who could not curse.

Although the exact mechanism by which swearing makes pain more tolerable has not been identified, the participants who cursed had higher heart rates, indicating a physical emotional response to saying the words.

Researchers have not suggested an immediate practical use for the study's results, but try letting loose next time you have a booster jab at the doctors' office. If anyone complains, just tell them you're a part of cutting-edge scientific research.
