Accept health care reform or face an economic collapse in the United States. That dire warning was President Barack Obama's underlying message today to a meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA).
President Obama spoke in no uncertain terms about the need for reform:
Make no mistake: the cost of our health care is a threat to our economy. It is an escalating burden on our families and businesses. It is a ticking time-bomb for the federal budget. And it is unsustainable for the United States of America.
-President Barack Obama, June 15, 2009
Obama identified health care reform as key to the country's overall economic strength and an important part of bringing the United States out of its current recession. The President called for a comprehensive upgrade to electronic medical records, a renewed focus on a preventative approach to health care, and a strong effort to bring medicine back to its status as a necessary professional service as opposed to a business opportunity.
Plans to cut costs came as no surprise, but Obama's controversial proposal to create a public health care insurance option has some insurance companies worried that possible competitive advantages will put them out of business. However, the President has repeatedly assured Americans that they will be able to keep their insurance plans if they so desire.
With close to 50 million United States citizens without health insurance, there is tremendous public support for health care reform that extends coverage to all- at this point it is only a question of what that reform will look like.
