A new study indicates that the male partners of pregnant women gain an average of 14 pounds during the pregnancy.
Many of the 5,000 men polled blamed the extra pounds on bigger meals, increased availability of snack foods, dining out, and stress. Junk food and beer were the most commonly cited sources of extra calories.
How can fathers-to-be avoid paralleling their partners' belly growth? Awareness of the potential for easy weight gain is key. Most men in the study said they didn't realize they were getting heavier until they had to purchase a whole new set of clothing.
Women naturally gain a considerable amount of weight while pregnant, and hormonal changes paired with increased nutritional requirements mean that they need to eat more, more often. Men need to separate themselves from their partner's new eating patterns, and stick to their customary diet.
Above all, make sure to have healthy food choices available at home- if you don't have junk food around, you won't eat it.
