2010 Ford Taurus SHO
2010 Ford Taurus SHO

A few years back I did a review on the Ford Taurus. At the time, I made a public plea to the Detroit motor giant—“Ford, PLEEEZZZEEE bring back the Taurus SHO!”  I think someone took note and actually got the ball rolling pronto. The new 2010 Ford Taurus SHO is one statuesque beauty (OK, give me some creative license here). The 2010 SHO is BIG with a commanding presence, stylish in and out and a definite head-turner.

I remember back-in-the-day, the original ’89 Taurus SHO was a mid-sized car that kicked ‘mucho’ butt. It was a car lover’s vehicle. (BTW, the word SHO stands for super high output.) The earlier SHO was performance-oriented that was not meant to go any further than its intro model year of ’89. As a matter of fact, the vehicle was slated to have a limited run. The SHO was so hot that Ford continued to produce the vehicle for ten years, then pulled the curtain down after the car’s popularity faded. Believe it or not, the Taurus SHO actually won a cult following, just think about it…a ho-hum exterior design that packed a wallop under the hood—interesting combo.

Now the 2010 Ford Taurus SHO is back BIG time. At 4,346 pounds, it is nearly 1,000 pounds heavier than its predecessor. It has not a Yamaha engine like the original but a 3.5 liter EcoBoost V-6 that kicks out V-8 levels of power at 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 to 5,250 rpm. Direct fuel injection, variable intake valve timing, twin turbochargers--engine power is definitely felt when you turn the ignition key—0-60 in 5.2 secs.

What you feel while driving is not only power but total obedience, you feel in control. Electric power-assisted steering system is tight and gives you responsive road feel. Sports tuned suspension is almost perfection. Cornering, hardly any body roll. You really do tend to forget that you are in a pretty massive ride. And quiet…you will not be bothered by the annoying sounds that go on all around you.

A looker in and out, the exterior offers a sporty yet sophisticated design—the signature Ford three bar grille in the front, decklid real spoiler, twin chrome exhaust tip, sporty wheels with a choice of either 19” or 20” high performance tires. Inside you’ll find an ambience of again, sophistication and sportiness—10-way power adjustable comfy seats, an easy-to-read console with sensibly placed and intuitive controls, soothing ambient lighting, aluminum trimmed accelerator and brake pedals, and get this…enough room for rear passengers to even cross their legs with ease. Unheard of!

The 2010 Ford Taurus SHO wasn’t too bad at the pumps—17/25, I averaged around 18-19 mpg. With a starting price of $37,170, all I have to say is…“Put up your dukes Charger, Audi A6 and dare I say…BMW. Ford has produced a large German sedan!”  "Who said that???"
