Legendary actress and former Hollywood pinup, Farrah Fawcett, passed away at 9:28a.m. PST at St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California, after being diagnosed with anal cancer three years ago.
O'Neal told PEOPLE, "She's gone. She now belongs to the ages. She's now with her mother and sister and her God."
At the time of her death, Fawcett was surrounded by her loved ones: longtime partner Ryan O'Neal, friends Alana Stewart and Mela Murphy and her doctor Lawrence Piro.
On Monday, June 22, ABC News reported that O'Neal revealed to Barbara Walters during an exclusive 20/20 interview, scheduled to air tomorrow night, that he had asked Fawcett to marry him.
O'Neal stated: "I used to ask her to marry me all the time." He went on to say, "I promise you, we will. Absolutely." Sadly, that time never came for the couple, who began dating in 1980.
Fawcett's last film role was in the 2004 movie The Cookout as Mrs. Crowley. Before that, Fawcett appeared in many television and film roles, like The Six Million Dollar Man, Man of the House, Small Sacrifices and Spin City.
Most recently, Fawcett could be seen in a two-hour documentary, which chronicled her fight with cancer.
Fawcett was another iconic figure in the entertainment industry. Her upbeat attitude and approach to her disease set an example for all of us, showing us that anyone can be brave and stand tall in spite of the hands we are dealt in life. We only have to make that choice.
RIP Farrah Fawcett.
