This week’s pattern pick is McCall's 5717

Why it works: This works because it takes a basic lined coat and amps it up with one bold stroke.

Why you’ll love it:  I've asked this before: what’s not to love about ruffles? This pattern shows how you can go from "basic" to "wow" with one simple pattern piece. You can't often use the words "fun" and "tailored" together, but you can here.

Some fabrics to consider:
Shirt-weight flannels - sans lining fabric - can make this into a fall-favorite top. Bottom-weights such as twill or off-white denim will give you a new take on a cool-weather trench-coat. Line it with something bright and unexpected for added charm. Plaid wools and wool blends will take you from fall right into early winter.

Other options: Try the ruffled sleeve option and skip the lining for another "top" option. Say what you will about leggings, but they would make the perfect partner for this look.
