November 5, 2009 - Try as they might, some runners will never qualify for the Boston Marathon. There's a reason why running the Boston Marathon is so prestigious -- the qualifying times are tough and can be difficult for middle- and back-of-the-pack runners to meet. However, there are a number of charity programs that allow runners to run the Boston Marathon without meeting a qualifying time.
On Thursday, the Melanoma Foundation of New England announced that it is accepting applications for its 2010 Boston Marathon team, Running for Cover. In order to join the team, runners must commit to a minimum fundraising goal of $3,250. In addition to their Boston Marathon entry, team members receive apparel, training support and feedback from team captain Bill Rodgers.
The Melanoma Foundation isn't the only charity with a Boston Marathon program, and there are a number of charities to chose from. However, spots for 2010 are filling up fast if they have not been filled already. Team in Training, the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Homes For Our Troops, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and many others are official Boston Marathon charity partners. You can find a complete list on the Boston Marathon charity website.
The 114th Boston Marathon will be held on April 19, 2010.
