Singer Alanis Morissette completed her first marathon on October 11, 2009 when she ran the Bizz Johnson Marathon in Susanville, California. Morissette ran the marathon with her brother, Wade, to raise awareness about eating disorders. According to her official fundraising page, Alanis Morissette raised $3,780 for the National Eating Disorders Association.
Morissette completed the marathon in 4:17:03, which equates to a 9:49 pace for 26.2 miles. Her brother, Wade, finished the marathon in 5:27:42, according to the official race results. The Bizz Johnson Marathon is a small trail marathon that is open to just 500 runners each year. Two half marathons are also held, with limits of a few hundred runners each.
On her website, Alanis Morissette talked about her reasons for running the marathon and why she wanted to raise awareness about eating disorders. "Bringing this kind of awareness to this time and this cause has been one of the great chapters of my life," says Morissette. Alanis also speaks directly to those suffering from an eating disorder when she says: "I send love, formally, to the people whose hearts and bodies I/we are running on behalf of. You are not alone. And there is a way out." Morissette herself has battled an eating disorder, and she said training for the marathon has taken her healing "to another level." The night before the marathon, Morissette described her mood as "excited" and "nervous."
