With any mention of obscure controllers the name U-Force is bound to surface. The U-Force is an NES peripheral that uses two infrared sensors to translate your hand movements into game commands. It sounds awesome, yes, but this controller always comes with a unanimous vote of terrible from the gaming community. It’s not that it doesn’t work very well, or that it’s a stupid idea to begin with… no, wait, it is those things.
But NintendoAge.com has breathed life anew into this regrettable device. The community at NintendoAge banded together to raise enough money to purchase the previously unreleased U-Force Power Games ROM, and is offering it to the community for free on their site. This title by Broderbund, maker of the U-Force, contains the only games created specifically for the controller; Hose 'Em Down, Nuclear Rat Attack, Rock on Air, and Power Field B-Ball. As is mentioned on the site, this game was made for use with the U-Force controller. Regular emulation play isn’t going to work this time. So go over to RetroZone for the cartridge version. This cart can be played on any region NES or even a clone, as long as the clone has a port for original Nintendo controllers.
Maybe these games will prove the U-Force isn’t as bad as everyone thinks. Maybe there just haven’t been any games that used its unique interface to the fullest extent. And maybe I’ll find a couple Nintendo World Championships carts at Sam’s Club later today. Still, it’s an unreleased NES ROM with four games, each specifically designed for an insignificantly cool controller. In classic gaming culture that equals super duper rad. Plus Nuclear Rat Attack has 8-bit pink mutant rats. You should get that on principle.
Now is the future of classic games
