Washingtonian’s “The Best Of” Issue hits newstands! A Sneak Peak!

Washingtonian's July 2009, "The Best Of" Issue came out today and includes listings and descriptions of over 150 of the "best" people, places, and things to do - including reader's picks of their favs.

The food and dining section is of course of great interest to me. The Best Popsicles were chosen evidently by a group of seven-year old ballerina taste testers. What were they're favorites? They liked Julie's Organic Sorbet Bars in mandarin orange that run about $4.50 a box and can be found at gourmet grocers, such as Wegman's or Balducci's. The girls also liked Edy's strawberry fruit bars which cost slightly less $4.39 at Whole Foods.

As a native Washingtonian, I grew up eating MD Blue Crabs. Washingtonian editors picked their picks for where to go and get good crabs. On the top of their list was Jimmy Cantler's Riverside Inn in Annapolis, MD.  Also on the list is Bo Brooks Restaurant located in Baltimore, MD which was founded in 1964 and unlike most other crabhouses, Bo Brooks's seasoning used on their crabs is a "house recipe" consisting of three different seasonings that are hand-blended in each pot. The Fisherman's Crab Deck located in Kent Island is 63 miles from DC. The Crab Deck is located right on the water and is a great spot for eating crabs while watching the gorgeous sunset on the Chesapeake Bay. For Best Crabcake - Washingtonian editors said, "with so many restaurants serving crabcakes, you'd think it would be hard to settle on a best. It's not." What was their choice? Kinkead's located at 2000 Pennsylvania Ave. Downtown, DC.  

Al fresco dining is popular in the summertime and many local DC area restaurants offer fabulous outdoor dining. On the list of Best of for eating outdoors, Poste Brasserie in Penn Quarter, Black's Bar & Kitchen in Bethesda, Marvin on U St., 2941 in Merrifeld and Leopold's Kafe and Konditorieri in Georgetown were highlighted. Reader's picked Clyde's as their number one spot; however which location was not mentioned, as they have multiple locations. Second was Sequoia on Georgetown's waterfront and Lauriol Plaza in Dupont Circle.

Also in the food and dining section is tastiest tacos, best burgers, fabulous fries, guacamole, ribs, fried chicken, and best blueberry pie. Also where to go for the best takeout for packing a great picnic with ease.
