Sliced lemons- photo by Steve Woods
The sweet-tart flavor of lemon is a
summertime staple.

When it comes to cooling down in hot weather, nothing seems to work as well as the tart flavor of lemon. And of course, for many cocktails fans, vodka is our friend. So why not round out Vodka Month with a few quick shooters that combine two favorites?

Lemon Drop

  • 2 oz. citrus vodka
  • 1 oz. triple sec
  • squeeze of fresh lemon juice
  • lemon wedge

Combine all ingredients in a shake with ice. Strain into a sugar rimmed cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon wedge, OR serve as a shot, with a sugar coated lemon wedge on the side.

Lemon Twist on Fire

  • ¾ oz. citrus vodka
  • ¾ oz. Goldschlager (or cinnamon schnapps)

Pour both ingredients into an old-fashioned glass one-quarter filled with ice cubes. Stir well and serve.

Chocolate Cake Shooter

  • 1/2 shot citrus vodka
  • 1/2 shot Frangelico (or hazelnut liqueur)
  • lemon wedge

Mix equal parts citrus vodka and hazelnut liqueur into a shot glass. Drink the shot, and immediately suck on a sugar-coated lemon wedge.

Flaming Lemon Drop

  • 1 1/2 shot citrus vodka
  • 1 splash Galliano liqueuer
  • 1/2 slice lemon
  • 1/4 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp 151 proof rum

Pour the vodka into a shot glass and top off with a splash of Galliano. Place the lemon slice flat on the rim of the shot glass, put some sugar on the slice and soak the sugar with the rum. Just before drinking, ignite the sugar. Blow the flame out once the sugar begins to caramelize. Lick the sugar off the lemon slice, down the vodka, then suck on the lemon.

Be very careful when doing any sort of flaming shot!  Calls to 9-1-1 should not become part of the summer tradition.
