Southern Belle from 1861 Harper's Weekly

Tales of the Cocktail is an annual event held in New Orleans. It’s an internationally renowned five-day event that celebrates everything cocktail, presented by the New Orleans Culinary and Cultural Preservation Society. This year they will present the second annual nonalcoholic cocktail, the Sassy Southern Belle. The drink will be served at signature events.

The Sassy Southern Belle was created by Natalie Bovis-Nelson, author of Preggatinis: Mixology for the Mom-To-Be. Bovis-Nelson has pioneered the concept of applying the philosophy of high-end to non-alcoholic cocktails.

Sassy Southern Belle

  • 1/2 oz. peach puree
  • 1/4 oz. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz. mint tea infused simple syrup
  • 2 oz. Fre alcohol-removed White Zinfandel*
  • 1 oz. Fre alcohol-removed Brut*

Combine the peach puree, simple syrup, and Fre white zinfandel in an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Shake well, then strain into a julep cup filled with crushed ice. Top with Fre brut. Serve garnished with a sprig of mint and a straw.

To make mint simple syrup: Dissolve 1 cup granulated sugar in 1/2 cup freshly brewed mint tea in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, then lower heat and simmer for 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool before use. Store refrigerated.

The Sassy Southern Belle is a delicious choice for anyone who prefers a non-alcoholic cocktail.  Think of it for brunches, bridal, or baby showers - it can easily be increased to be made by the punchbowl!

* Fre Wines were created in 1992, and are traditional wines that have had the alcohol removed.
