Gov. Rod Blagojevich may or may not answer to state and federal authorities for his brazen auctioning of President-elect Barack Obama’s vacated Senate seat.  But he’s likely to answer to the court of heaven for his incongruous use of a children’s hospital as bait in one of his currency schemes.  The good governor apparently threatened to rescind 8 million dollars in Illinois funds for a children’s medical facility because someone neglected to offer up a campaign contribution.   Recommendation:  Rod serves as a diaper-changer in same hospital.

Bernard Madoff’s heinous financial crimes hurt the philanthropic causes of his own community in particular and with stunning injury.   In his self-absorbed fog, he became the O.J. Simpson of hedge funds.  Recommendation:  Bernie bakes and serves Hanukkah cookies to the homeless and hungry up and down Los Angeles’ Sepulveda Boulevard.

Madonna is in great physical condition (caught her callisthenic performance in San Diego the night Obama won) but she droops in the category of the spirit.  She pummeled her publicist for releasing the settlement figures related to her divorce (yes, divorce is actually the end of a marriage).  The early release of the numbers was meant to imply her generosity (this is too funny) but it backfired in the media and so the lady let her PR person take the fall.  Recommendation:  Madonna takes night classes about the real Madonna.

Sen. Hillary Clinton broke down and cried on the eve of the New Hampshire primary.  In all fairness, the late Sen. Edmund Muskie wept during a snowy primary in 1972 and thereby lost his momentum towards the Democratic presidential nomination.  Clinton’s spiritual meltdown, a product of fatigue and entitlement, propelled her to a surprise victory.  Recommendation: Secretary of State Clinton weeps in Gaza, creating shame and conciliation and a peace agreement.

Gov. Eliot Spitzer was disgraced out of office in Albany after revelations of his vivid involvement in a luxury prostitution ring.  This, after the man propelled himself (excuse the expression) into office as a tough reformer who would clean up all the corruption in New York.  Recommendation:  Still thinking.

THIS JUST IN : Gov. Sarah Palin today declared that she would have done better in the campaign had she been able to "call the shots" more and grant more interviews.  This now leads all entries as a 2008 spiritual train wreck.  Here is the evidence, verbatim, spoken by the Republican vice-presidential nominee: (Source: The New York Times)

My concern has been the atrocities there in Darfur and the relevance to me with that issue as we spoke about Africa and some of the countries there that were kind of the people succumbing to the dictators and the corruption of some collapsed governments on the continent, the relevance was Alaska’s investment in Darfur with some of our permanent fund dollars.

Let us close this contest now with a prayer for the English language.
