Looking for a real wine tasting bargain? (And, who isn’t) Look toward the mountains – the Santa Cruz Mountains for two weekends of tasting for only $30.
That’s four full days of whiffing, sniffing and sipping for an unbelievable price.
The Vintner’s Festival will uncork fun June 6&7 to showcase wineries on the western side of the mountains and June 13 & 14 highlighting those on the eastern side.
Passport visitors will receive a commemorative glass and entrance to all wineries; some not usually open to the public. From 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. there will be barrel tasting, new release tasting, live music, chef demonstrations, vineyard tours and local food.
The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west.
The winegrowing region includes Bonny Doon, Boulder Creek, Soquel, Felton, Ben Lomond, Los Gatos, Aptos, Santa Cruz, Scotts Valley, San Martin, Woodside, San Carlos, Redwood City, Saratoga and Gilroy.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit Heart of the Mountain Vineyards and Winery that was once owned by famed director Alfred Hitchcock from 1940 to 1974. A shuttle to the winery will leave throughout the day from 100 Enterprise Way in Scotts Valley and give tasters a history of the property.
The first weekend 36 wineries will offer wine tasting in 30 locations and the second weekend 34 wineries will be pouring in 20 locations in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
