The haunted caves of Clos Pegase winery will be dripping with wine and eerie spirits as it hosts its first Haunted Halloween Party Oct. 31 from 1:30 – 4 p.m. in Calistoga.

The scream fest will include a costume contest, trick or treating, creepy music and “vine” tasting. Brave souls can buy the very limited Graveyard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon, if they dare.

Legend has it that the farmer who cleared the rough terrain for planting the vineyard in 1989 stood back to rest and was shocked to see that all the unearthed white rocks looked like pale, scary tombstones. The name – Graveyard Hill – suited the area.

Wine cellar masters describe the “killer” vintage as having excellent quality, high intensity, ripe fruit with jammy and food friendly notes.

Clos Pegase wines range in price from $20 (Sauvignon Blanc) to $85 (Cabernet Sauvignon).

“Our winery was one of the first in Napa County to construct caves so it is the perfect setting for the hellacious harvest happening,” said “winery wench” Susie Straight. “At the party, trick and treaters can visit the different wine cave stations, pick up wine discount coupons and grab hands full of gummy eye balls, glow sticks and spider rings for their Halloween goodie bag.”

Also on the menu will be a condensed version of “Hamlet” performed by the “zombies” (no, not really) from the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival. It is the ghostly tale of a prince whose royal family is disrupted by political event. The winery’s Cave Theater will be transformed into a medieval court of Denmark.

Reservations are suggested by calling 707-942-4091. The cost is $25 per person and $15 for wine clubbers. Party creatures must be 21 years or older to attend and no children are allowed at this spirited-infused gathering.
