Smack dab in the middle of Jefferson Boulevard in north Oak Cliff there turns another of my favorite Dallas signs. Revolving slowly above the building on which he perches, the symbol of the Raven Pharmacy has a dual nature to me. He’s a welcome blast from the past but still part of the present; a good lookin’ dude staring daggers at his rival across the street on every turn.
But there’s also something slightly menacing about a big black raven as the welcoming committee to a pharmacy, a place where sick people go to get things to help them get well. He’s just a little bit dangerous. My recommendation if you’re going there to have a prescription filled is to scuttle in the front door when his back is turned to avoid him casting his beady black eye upon you. If you do happen to make eye contact, there are several botanicas near by where you can stop in for a little herbal anecdote. Not that I’m superstitious or anything, but he’s really best viewed from across the street.
