With a headline like that you may be wondering when breastfeeding was ever illegal. Well, up until 2001 nursing mothers could be ticketed with indecent exposure in any public place throughout the state. And as of last week, women are now free to breastfeed anywhere in public throughout the state.
Thanks to governer Christine Gregiore and Within Reach state laws HB1596 and RCW 49.60.030 have been amended to include the following: (g) the right of a mother to breastfeed her child in any place of public resort, accommodation, assemblage, or amusement.
And in case you weren't aware, this is all happening during Breastfeeding Awareness Month. Who knew! Still thirsty for more? Check out the summer edition of Breastfeeding Matters, a publication from the Breastfeeding Coalition of Washington and a great Inhabitots article on getting breastfeeding off to a good start.
