It's disingenuous to claim the new Killzone 2 maps for multiplayer are “worth” $5.99. They're worth more than that – they are worth your continued relationship with the KZ2 property.
The 'Flash & Thunder' DLC released June 10 is like when your girlfriend goes out of town for a few weeks and comes back with a bunch of new stories. It makes you remember why you got into this relationship in the first place. I started ignoring KZ2 for the new Red Faction: Guerrilla and the pressing demands of living life offline, but FAT put me right back on the crazy train. Why? In a word: ambiance.
Killzone 2 ambiance is masterful. The wind, the lighting, and the dust constantly reinforce one subconscious thought: “you're gonna get killed”. Never have environments felt more menacing. The smart people over at Guerrilla games drilled down into this fact with FAT. The rain, driving wind and lightning of “Beach Head” makes a standard 16 vs. 16 deathmatch into an epic, D-Day tour de force. Anyone who fights in these conditions obviously has a lot at stake.
The second map “Southern Hills”, overloads that same concept. Out in the Helghan badlands, random nuclear shockwaves occasionally incinerate all those left outside. The nuclear wind and rain of fire will sear you like Ahi tuna if you don't hede the klaxon and rush indoors. Those inside then re-emerge to fight on in a raging, radioactive sandstorm filled with debris. Whenever I hear that KARRANG!, my genitals go hide in my lower abdomen.
FAT makes we want to take my relationship with KZ2 to the next level. For the first time, I'm thinking of settling down, joining a clan, maybe even spawning some Helghans of my own. Overall score: 95/100.
