Ever since Modern Warfare 2 footage leaked showing the casual massacre of civilians - everyone's awaited a response from Infinity Ward. Among them, MW2 writer Jesse Stern tells USA Today today:

That footage doesn't provide full context for the scene, Stern says. "It is upsetting and disturbing, but it's not what you think it is. You are meant to bear as close a witness as possible to a pretty revolting atrocity. That is the intent of the level, to put you in a situation like that. ... It is the shape of modern warfare these days, violence against citizens."

Cop out? Cop-in? Either way, it may be a reflection of the game's overall quality that we're even having this discussion. MW2 looks so good, run of the mill civilian killing - long-time staples of gaming - now fundamentally bother people. Is the other side of the uncanny vallly a revulsion to spot-on realism?
