San Francisco School of Bartending (SFSOB) has mixed up a new class and made its debut on September 20th, 2009. The new Mixology course is designed for people who have a basic concept of bartending and want to take their craft to the next level. Bartending school graduates, professional bartenders, at-home mixologists and anyone who has a passion for cocktail making are welcomed to attend. Prior bartending knowledge isn’t necessary to take the course, but it’s certainly helpful.
During the three and a half hour course, students are instructed on how to properly use all of the tools they receive in their bartender kit, which is included with registration of the course. The bartender kit includes a Boston shaker set, jigger, bar spoon, Hawthorne strainer and a julep strainer. Students learn how to build twelve classic cocktails while learning about each of the cocktail’s origin and history. Students also learn the key differences between stirring and shaking, how to properly build a cocktail, advanced techniques of cocktail making, the important role of ice in each drink, how bitters can enhance a cocktail, how to taste spirits and what to taste for and also have the opportunity to make and taste cocktails using real alcohol and fresh garnishes.
The first half of the class is taught in the SFSOB classroom, behind a real bar setup, using real bar tools and colored water to build the drinks. There is no formal test for this course. Instead, the second half of the course is taught off-site where every student has an opportunity to make two drinks from the course recipe list, using their bar tools, real garnishes and real alcohol. In addition, students have the chance to taste test each of the drinks that are made.
The next Mixology course will be held on Sunday, December 13th, exclusively at Infusion Lounge (124 Ellis Street, San Francisco) from 11:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The course tuition is $109, which includes the complete take-home bartender kit and a large variety of fine spirits to taste and create cocktails with during the course. To register for the course, either call SFSOB at 415-362-1116 or visit the San Francisco School of Bartending website to register online.
