For those Salt Lake residents who never thought they would get the chance to see the risque humour of the “Avenue Q” puppets on their home stage, here’s your chance. The show, which follows the laughs, disappointments, and relationship dramas of a group of friends trying to make it in New York City (who just happen to be fabric) is coming to Salt Lake City as part of Broadway Across America’s 2009-2010 season. The show, which Entertainment Weekly called “the funniest musical you’re ever likely to see,” is currently scheduled to hit Capitol Theatre on Febrary 2-7, 2010.
First on the schedule, however, is “The Wedding Singer,” which is scheduled to hit Capitol Theatre on December 8-13, 2009. The Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore romantic comedy loses some body humor jokes in its transition to the stage, but the 80’s songs and the story of two outcasts falling in love with each other remain (reviews seem to suggest that, if you liked the movie, you’ll like the musical).
The season rounds out with Legally Blond on March 23-28, another movie to turn into an all-out musical (as sugar-pop as the original, according to the reviews, but remember that there’s no Reese Witherspoon), and the Lion King on August 11-September 26 (From the New York Times: “Ms. Taymor has introduced a whole new vocabulary of images to the Broadway blockbuster, and you're unlikely to forget such sights as the face of Simba's dead father forming itself into an astral mask among the stars”)
Dates for ticket sales haven’t been released yet, but I’ll update you as soon as they are.
