When you hear the name “Valentino,” a number of things can pop into your head. More than likely one of those is fashion designer, Valentino Garavani. Valentino is known all over the world for his classic, high-fashion dresses. His designs have lasted decades, appearing on everyone from Jackie Kennedy to Gwyneth Paltrow. When I got the chance to see the new documentary about this life, Valentino: The Last Emperor, I knew I couldn't pass it up.
Valentino, directed and produced by Matt Tyrnauer, documents the days of Valentino, his long-time companion Giancarlo Giammetti, his entourage, and, of course, the six pugs he can't go anywhere without. Instead of just getting a peek into the world of fashion, viewers are practically immersed in Valentino's everyday life. The fashion process as a whole is revealed, from the primary sketch of a dress, to the construction, the company, the fashion show, and finally the event. We also learn quite a bit about Valentino's past, how he got started, and the changes he's had to go through.

The second part of the documentary follows the preparation leading up to the 45-year anniversary celebration of Valentino in Rome. It's here we really get to take a trip down memory lane as we overhear a special conversation between Valentino and Karl Lagerfeld about some of the favorite dresses over the past 45 years.
But I don't want to give too much away. If you love fashion, or even if you can barely dress yourself, you're almost guaranteed to enjoy this movie. I came with high expectations, and they were met with laughter, intrigue, and the shedding of a tear or two. Time, The New York Times, and Wall Street Journal have already given it glowing reviews, so click here to visit the website and see where it's playing near you.
