Karl's fingerless, Photo Jacques Brinon

I’ve been on the hunt for a nice pair of gloves for a while now. I never realized how much I needed a good pair of gloves until I had to walk a total of twenty blocks everyday downtown. A nice pair of gloves doesn’t just keep your hands toasty; it keeps them soft. And you only get one pair of hands. Unless you’re Shiva, in which case you have the two, but we won’t get into that.

I’m a bit picky when it comes to picking out an accessory I’m going to be wearing on a daily basis. My gloves need to be functional, durable, and, most importantly, fashionable.

With all the touch screens on your iPods, cell phones, and other gadgets these days, it won’t take you long to discover you might need some fingerless gloves. Unless you’re me, in which case you assume your iPod’s touch screen is broken, only to realize after two hours and five stressed voicemails to your boyfriend that you simply have neglected to remove your gloves. The good news is that fingerless gloves fit right in with the trends. And if you’re worried your fingers will get cold, never fear, many come with a convertible flap to pull over your freezing phalanges.

If you’re really feeling the chills run up your arms, you’re in luck yet again. Long gloves, running up to the elbows, are also very fashion-forward this season. Check out a leather pair here and a wool pair here, both from Urban Outfitters. If you’re feeling extra frisky, you might opt for long gloves that are fingerless, too! Now that sounds like my idea of a good time. Although my idea of a good time also includes settling in to do the dishes on a Friday night, so you might not want to take my word on it after all.
