This is a great day to reflect on the most important asset of any business - its customers. January 17 is Customer Service Day and it is a day to pause and thank all of your clients for their business. For any organization, whether service- or product-based, gratitude must be given to those that honor and patronage your business.

While the customer drives the success of any business, it is also imperative to honor your employees. Many organizations do not realize that customer service is not only external- it is internal, too. Customer service is the interaction among departments and should be enculturated into the organization. Each organization must practice great communication, and gratitude among staff.

Some tips for customer awareness include:

  • A special promotion to honor VIP and loyal customers.
  • A thank-you card to everyone in your database.
  • A telephone call of thanks personally from the owner of the organization. This should not be recorded.
  • Provide a keepsake or award for special clients.
  • Offer free services when possible.
  • And most importantly - provide some form of gratitude for those staff that is front and center with your clients. These include reception, customer service representatives, sales professionals, etc.

Whatever you do, ensure you do not forget the day. Remember the customer pays the utility bills, the salaries and product development. Aside from their first name, thank you is the sweetest expression they will ever hear.
