  • 1775: The United States Marine Corps is founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • 1871: Welsh journalist and explorer Henry M. Stanley finds missing Scottish missionary David Livingstone in central Africa and asks, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”

  • 1954: President Dwight D. Eisenhower dedicates the USMC War Memorial (the Iwo Jima memorial) in Arlington National Cemetery.

November 10 is the United States Marine Corps birthday ball, a tradition held each year to celebrate the birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps. A ball and a cake-cutting ceremony are held. Today is also Heroes’ Day in Indonesia, commemorating the fighting between Indonesian nationalist militias and British Allied Forces. It is Cry of Independence Day in Panama, the start of the Panamanian independence from Spanish rulers and Day of Remembrance of Ataturk in Turkey, a day to remember Turkey’s first president, Mustafa Ataturk. At 9:05 am on November 10, the exact time of his death, all vehicles and people in the country pause for one minute to remember Ataturk.
