CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) are an integral part of re-connecting people with the farms and farmers that actually grow their food. CSAs are also one of the easiest ways to make good on that summer goal to eat more locally produced foods.
Despite a short growing season here in Northern Colorado, we are blessed with several active CSAs that offer regular shares of their organically grown seasonal harvest for a fraction of the price that it would cost at an organic grocer. And you get the satisfaction of supporting a small, organic farmer in your neighborhood.
Grant Family Farms CSA
Grant Family Farms has been around since the 1960's and was one of the first certified organic farms in the State of Colorado. The main crops grown by Grant Family are Cabbage, Lettuce, Spinach, Summer Greens and Herbs, Broccoli, Summer and Winter Squash and Wheat, although fruit, flower and egg shares are also available. Unlike many of the other CSAs in the area, Grant Family Farms is STILL offering full shares for the 2009 growing season! Visit grantfarms.com to learn more about pick up/delivery locations and pricing.
Also, don't forget to attend the Spring Farm Tour being hosted by Grant Family Farms and The Rocky Mountain Sustainable Living Association on Saturday, June 6 from 10 am - 6 pm. Come on out to the Farm and see for yourself how CSA veggies are grown. Take a ride through the fields to see view how the spinach is sprouting and the cilantro is coming along. Learn more about organic agriculture, eating fresh veggies, and the local food movement from a series of educational presentations, featuring: Range; Dr. Lewis Grant of Grant Family Farms; and Stephanie You, dietitian with Heart Center of the Rockies. Music, kids activities, farm fresh food, local food vendors, and beverages from Fort Collins Brewery will also be available! (Visit website for more info and directions).
Happy Heart Farm CSA
Happy Heart Farm is a community supporting biodynamic farm and educational center inspiring community spirit through earth stewardship and celebration. Besides the traditional vegetable share, Happy Heart also offers berry, buffalo, honey, fruit juice, mushroom, yogurt and raw milk shares. If a tight cash-flow has you thinking a CSA share is out of the question, ask Happy Heart about their working shares, which offer a discount in exchange for volunteering around the farm. Visit www.happyheartfarmcsa.com to learn more.
CSU CSA
That's right, the Specialty Crops program at Colorado State University also offers a member-based CSA- and the deadline for 2009 membership has been extended! The CSU CSA provides people who become with members a wide variety of local organic produce. The farm is tended by CSU students who are passionate about organic agriculture and who want to share their bounty with the local community. Visit www.specialtycrops.colostate.edu to learn more.
