The LA Times unleashed a scathing article about Toyota and NHTSA regarding sudden acceleration and the way complaints were handled.
The paper dug up reports stating that cases were dismissed many times because they did not fit a certain profile. Or other cases were just excluded because they did not fit into a neat category. One notable example was if a car took off, and then could not be stopped by using the brakes it was thrown out, reason being that the brakes, "would always overcome an engine and stop a car." Other issues were if an incident was very brief or a cause was not known. A safety expert may have uncovered a couple thousand incidents of Toyota and Lexus vehicles having unintended sudden acceleration. Basically, for the government, vehicles had to perform consistently the same way for a call on a possible defect.
Then there is Toyota, which says nothing relating to an engine problem could be found. Toyota has said mis-fitting floormats are to blame.
