If you travel Interstate 80 through Bergen County, today starts a long 3 week period of lane closures.
Starting today the express lanes of I-80 will be closed for construction for the next 3 weeks. The work zone will run from the following mile markers: 58.2 to 65.4 eastbound in the express lanes. That means all traffic will have to use the local lanes including trucks, but trucks will still need to use the upper level of the George Washington Bridge. A cross over exists near Route 17 for this purpose. This is not off peak construction, the rush hours will be affected! Do not wait until the last minute to leave home, or better yet, carpool or use mass transit if possible. Possible rail alternatives may include, The New Jersey Transit Main and Bergen County Line, the Montclair-Boonton or Morris & Essex lines. The latter two go into New York City.
The scope of the work being done, according to nj.com, is 25 bridge decks being repaired and repaving between the aforementioned mile markers.
All will not be golden at the end of the 3 week period, after that the local lanes will be closed for 2 weeks.
If anyone can look on the bright side of this construction zone, at least take heart knowing some people are working because of this project, this a is an American Recovery and Investment Act project. The project will provide a much better ride on I-80 when it is all said and done.
"Happy motoring!"
