ZAP the California based electric car company was in New York City earlier this week to show off its ZAP Alias concept vehicle.
The vehicle is participating in the Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize contest. The contest allows teams to compete in the development of alternative propulsion vehicles that achieves the equivalent of 100 mpg. Participants come from all over the world, some are upstart companies, others mainstream manufacturers.
The Alias will be a highway capable three wheel vehicle able to reach 75 mph, feature lightweight composite construction and luxury necessities as power windows and a GPS system. The powertrain will use AC/DC motors and lithium ion batteries. This is in stark contrast to their current basic Xebra line offering lead-acid batteries and a 40 mph top speed. Also, unlike the Xebra line, the single wheel will be in the rear not in the front.
ZAP moved on to the next round which is the technical round. This round allows for vehicle testing and brings it closer to production reality.
