Eating out on Maui can be pretty pricey. And sometimes what you get isn't that great. Here are some of my favorites on Maui:

Honolua Store in the Kapalua resort was a great find. Just a short walk from the Ritz Carlton, Honolua has coffee and epresso and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner deli-style. The store also has gift items, beer and wine, fresh produce and other food items. These aren't so cheap, but the made-to-order food is a deal. Breakfast items include omelettes, eggs, pancakes. Lunch offers a Hawaiian plate lunch along with sandwiches, wraps, and burgers. DInner includes entrees as well as burgers, sandwiches, wraps, and pizza. Everything runs around $5 - $8.

For a view and real Hawaiian food, try Aloha Mixed Plate in Lahaina. Food is served outside right next to Lahaina Bay and the Old Lahaina Luau. If you are there during a performance you will be able to hear a lot and if you skip alcoholic beverages and sit down below the deck, you might catch a few glimpes of the performers. (Alcohol is only served on the raised deck.)  Meals are reasonably priced; catch Happy Hour specials on appetizers and drinks daily from 2-6pm. Phone: 808-661-3322 Address:1285 Front Street, Lahaina HI 96761.

North of Lahaina, close to Kaanapali, Java Jazz and Soup Nutz is located in a strip mall. Don't let that fool you! While known for their coffee and for serving breakfast all day long, they also have a full-service bar and serve amazing dinner entrees. Nightly specials offer up the best of local fish and other foods. The atmosphere inside is cool and dark, a nice break from the hot sun. And there is nightly live music after dark. Catch the funky art work and polaroids of happy customers along the walls. Phone: 808-667-0787 Address: 3350 Lower Honoapiilani #203 & 204, Lahaina, HI 96761.

With many locations Maui Tacos is a deal. Offering many varieties of tacos and burritos, you can catch lunch or dinner for $5-8.

If you are taking the Road to Hana, make sure and catch Cafe des Amis in the cute little town of Paia. I stopped for a wonderful breakfast crepe en route to Hana and was tempted to catch dinner on the way home. Time didn't allow but others tell me the curries are just as good as the crepes. Indoor/outdoor eating in a casual atmosphere. Phone: 808-579-6323 Address: 42 Baldwin Ave, Paia, HI 96779.

For a yummy smoothie or a break from restaurant eating, try the Down to Earth Organic and Natural food store in Kahului. The all-vegetarian grocery store has a salad bar and hot food bar where you can pick and choose from a large selection. You can also order made-to-order sandwiches, fresh juices, and smoothies. Maui location: 305 Dairy Drive, Kahului, HI 96732  (Other locations on Oahu.)
