Earlier this summer, the Giants lost newly signed linebacker Michael Boley for most, if not all, of training camp. We now know that Boley will not be playing in the 2009 NFL season opener.
The Star-Ledger and various other sources have reported that the NFL has suspended Michael Boley. The suspension comes from a violation of the NFL's personal conduct policy. In May of 2008, Boley was arrested and charged with battery after getting into a verbal argument with his wife. This incident occurred while Boley was a member of the Atlanta Falcons.
According to the Star-Ledger, the New York Giants expected Boley to be suspended by the NFL when the team signed the then free agent linebacker in the spring. Boley may have very well missed the first game of the 2009 NFL regular season, anyway, due to a hip injury that required surgery. If nothing else, the one game suspension will ensure that Boley is 100 percent when he returns to the Giants. Boley will be eligible to play for the team immediately following the first game of the regular season.
