The New Orleans Saints are the best team in the NFL.
The Saints simply ca-rushed the New York Giants on Sunday afternoon, defeating Big Blue 48-27 in New Orleans. A full game recap and box score can be found here.
The Good: Not a whole lot. Domenik Hixon was back returning kicks and was quite successful, averaging 32.9 yards on seven kick returns and 25.5 yards on two punt returns.
Rookie wide receiver Hakeem Nicks grabbed five catches for 114 yards and a touchdown.
And that's about it. Oh, the Giants did come out of the tunnel wearing the right uniforms.
The Bad: The Giants' pass defense. Simply put, there was none. Quarterback Drew Brees had all day to throw and he took advantage of it, completing 23 of 30 attempts for 369 yards and four touchdowns. Saints' wide out Marques Colston made New York cornerback Terrell Thomas look silly all game long. Colston finished with eight catches, 166 receiving yards and a score.
Eli Manning was the "Bad Eli" against New Orleans on Sunday, completing 14 of 31 pass attempts for 178 yards with a touchdown and interception. Manning missed several open wide receivers during the game, including Steve Smith in the first quarter in what would have been an easy six points for the Giants.
In Eli's defense, there were white shirts in the backfield all game long. Manning was only sacked twice but he faced constant pressure from a persistent Saints defense. There was also no time for the Giants to establish any rushing attack whatsoever as they trailed 14-0 in the first quarter and had given up 31 points by halftime. Yuck.
The Ugly: Former New York Giants tight end Jeremy Shockey caught a touchdown in his first game against his former team. That's just about enough to make me sick to my stomach.
I'm bringing up the Giants' secondary once more. Drew Brees and company emasculated this unit so badly that it really can't be mentioned enough. The New York Giants defense was embarrassed from the word "Go."
Overall: Drew Brees is possibly the best quarterback in football (I said it), Marques Colston will be giving members of the Giants secondary nightmares for weeks and the Saints will be number one in my upcoming NFL power rankings. They're the best team I've seen in the 2009 NFL regular season, period. At this point of the season, if you don't believe the Saints to be the best team in football, you're wrong.
