Happy Earth Day! Today is a day to praise Mother Nature for her gifts, and show her that you care by giving back.
As a frequent enjoyer of Seattle’s magnificent urban parks, it seems very appropriate that I partake in one of the volunteer work parties happening around the city to clean up various parks and remove invasive weeds. Events are held on Earth Day and through out the next few weeks. See the calendar here.
Want to discover how easy it is to be “green”? Attend the Earth Day Expo at Westlake Plaza in downtown Seattle from 10 am to 2 pm today. Admission is free.
If you can’t make it to a programmed event, you can still do something for your personal wellness while giving back to Mother Nature on your own schedule. Walk to the grocery store rather than drive. Plant a tree in your backyard. Purchase green products for your home (equally important for the health of your home and the earth).
On the other hand, maybe you are still not convinced that the planet is in severe danger. Perhaps you know someone like this? Or, like me, you are simply curious and hungry for knowledge. If so, this is one of the rare occasions that I advocate you turn the TV on rather than off. Tonight, the Pacific Northwest, known for its pristine water and old-growth trees, will find out what’s happening to the environment in our own backyard. PBS is holding a special at 9 pm on America’s Poisoned Waters, particularly the Duwamish waterway of Puget Sound. I may finally have substantial cause to install a water filtration system for my entire house!
And if this is a busy week for you and all else fails...hug a tree.
