It doesn't matter if you like to read for pleasure or to learn, or whether you prefer a magazine or the Bible; we should all make an effort to read - for the brain as much as for the soul.

According to experts, brain deterioration begins as early as 18 years old in individuals who fail to stimulate their brains on a regular basis (frontlinebooks.co.uk). If this concerns you (and it should), next time choose a book, a game or a crossword puzzle over the TV. Take a night class in whatever subject interests you, if you are lucky enough to afford the time and cost.

For those who are feeling the crunch of the Great Recession, visit your local library. Better yet, since most Seattle neighborhoods have their own, you can walk! This is sustainable living at it’s best. A whole Saturday afternoon can disappear in a walk to the library and careful browsing of each section: magazines, DVDs, CDs, fiction, non-fiction, books on tape, and more.

Meanwhile, you have not spent a dime. Your carbon footprint is nothing. You didn’t ask for another book to be printed and another tree to be cut down. Rather, you are taking part in something greater. You are an active member of the collective community.

You can decide to change your life using the resources of a public library system. Or you can just borrow a great movie. (Be warned that if there are a lot of holds, it may take a while. But don’t complain - it’s free!)

The library has helped me find small joys as well as significant knowledge. Visit yours today and find something for yourself.
