Houston, the Cubs have some major problems
I was away from TVs and the internet for virtually all of the long, Labor Day weekend and when I turned on ESPN this morning, honestly, I was shocked at what I saw…The Cubs have lost 4 straight games (all at home), hold only a 4 ½ game lead over the Brewers and Zambrano might be hurt? What a difference a weekend makes. This is not the team I left on Friday.
So is it time to start panicking?
No. I don’t think so. But if someone could explain to me what is happening to this team right now I would really appreciate it.
The Cubs hadn’t lost 2 in a row (let alone 4) since the end of July when they lost 2 to the Marlins. But you know, painful as these losing streaks can be, they’re all part of the game of baseball. They don’t scare me too much. What does scare is the way they’ve been losing. By all accounts (and I admit that I didn’t watch any of these games) the Cubs have looked slow, disheartened, and passionless. THAT is what scares me.
This is depressing isn’t it? All this losing makes me feel like maybe no lead in the tough NL Central is ever large enough, and maybe this team isn’t headed on to as much glory as I once thought. But you know, truth be told, I still think this team is excellent, and still at this point the best Cubs team of my lifetime. It just seems as though that team hasn’t shown up the last few days.
The good news is that after the last game of the Astros series this afternoon the Cubs will have a day off tomorrow and then a 3 game series against a pretty bad Reds team followed by yet another day off. Hopefully this’ll give the boys some time to regain their focus and motivation and rest up a bit before a tough end to the regular season.
So chin up today guys, tough as that may be to do. A win today would really help these guys get back on track. Keep your fingers crossed.
