So much for rotator cuff tendinitis, huh?
In his first start since pulling himself from a game 12 days before, Carlos Zambrano threw a no-hitter against the "home team" Astros in Miller Park, alleviating fears about the Ace's health going into the end of the season. Big Z struck out 10 in this historic performance, with only one walk and one hit batter. By all accounts he looked strong from the game's beginning, tossing fast balls that reached 97/98 mph for the first time in months.
Zambrano's no-no was the first for the Cubs since 1972, the first by any team in Miller Park (to the infinite chagrin of Brewers' fans everywhere) and the first during a third-party ball game.
Perhaps even more importantly, with the Phillies sweep of the Brewers in Philadelphia the Cubs now hold a 7.5-game lead in the NL Central and have dropped their magic number to just 7 with two weeks remaining of regular season ball. The Phils and the Brew Crew are now tied for first place in the hunt for the Wild Card with the Astros just two games back.
While certainly celebrating Zambrano's accomplishment, the Cubs must get back to the business at hand (which is to say, winning) this afternoon as they play their second game at Miller Park against the 'Stros. Let's continue to take advantage of the Cubs-friendly ball park and take this game too.
Go cubbies go!
