ANDREW McCUTCHEN NAMED MAJOR LEAGUE ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
BY BASEBALL AMERICA
- Garrett Jones named to 2009 All-Rookie Team -

Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen has been named 2009 Major League Rookie of the Year by Baseball America. The current edition of the publication features McCutchen on the cover and is available now.

McCutchen, 23, hit .286 with 26 doubles, nine triples, 12 home runs, 54 RBI and 22 stolen bases in 108 games with Pittsburgh after joining the club on June 4. He led all National League rookies with 47 extra-base hits and ranked second among N.L. rookies in multi-hit games (36), runs, walks and total bases (204). In addition, he ranked third in RBI, third in stolen bases, third in slugging percentage (.471), third in doubles, fifth in batting and fourth in on-base percentage among N.L. rookies.

Pittsburgh’s first-round selection (11th pick overall) in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, McCutchen led off all 108 games he played and ranked third among N.L. leadoff hitters in RBI and fifth in slugging percentage. He also ranked third among N.L. leadoff hitters in home runs behind Jimmy Rollins (18) and Alfonso Soriano (14). McCutchen also hit four home runs leading off the first inning - the first Pittsburgh rookie to do so and the first Bucco overall with four since Al Martin hit six in 1999.

With the Pirates this season, McCutchen produced three separate hitting streaks of 10 or more games; a 13-game streak from 6/11-25, a 12-game streak from 8/17-30 and a 10-game streak from 9/13-23 - the first Pittsburgh rookie to have three hitting streaks of 10 or more games since Richie Zisk in 1973 (10, 10 and 12 games). He also hit .600 with the bases loaded to rank third among National League players behind Todd Helton (.625) and Kaz Matsui (.625).

McCutchen made his professional debut with the GCL Pirates in 2005 and went on to produce a .287 batting average, 70 doubles, 34 home runs, 182 RBI and 71 stolen bases in 376 minor league games. He was also rated by Baseball America as the “Most Exciting Player” in the International League this past season.

Garrett Jones was also named to the Baseball America 2009 All-Rookie team as a first baseman. In 82 games with the Pirates, the 28-year-old Jones hit .293 with 21 doubles, 21 home runs and 44 RBI. He led all rookies in home runs and slugging percentage (.567) and tied for fifth among all Major League players in home runs from the time of his promotion (July 1) through the end of the season.

Jones became the fastest player in team history to reach 10 home runs in a season, hitting 10 in his first 19 games, and his 21 home runs were the most by a left-handed hitting rookie in club history. In addition to leading all rookies in home runs, Jones ranked second among National League rookies in on-base percentage (.372), third in batting, fifth in total bases (178) and sixth in RBIs.

Also in Pirates news, the team requested outright waivers on RHP Tyler Yates and he has elected free agency today.

The Pirates roster is at 38, plus pitchers Evan Meek and Jose Ascanio, who are on the 60-day disabled list.
