Cadaver dogs were mentioned in the news this week in the case of kidnap victim Jaycee Dugard and alleged kidnapper and child rapist Phillip Garrido. They were used to investigate Garrido’s property and possibly sniffed out some new evidence. So, what are cadaver dogs?
Cadaver dogs are canines trained to catch the scent of decomposing flesh. As a result, they can tell if someone died on an alleged criminal’s property or at a crime scene. Special chemicals that simulate the smell of human flesh are used to train these types of dogs. Once they (the cadaver dogs) have completed all of their training, they are able to proficiently detect the remains of whole or partial bodies. Cadaver dogs are often used with search and rescue dogs during crime investigations.
So, hopefully, the cadaver dogs used in the case of Jaycee Dugard and Phillip Garrido will help reveal more information about the nature of the crimes committed on the property. Currently, police believe they have found the remains of two other kidnap victims. What happens next will possibly help bring closure to the parents of missing children in the California community surrounding Garrido's homes.
