The 4th of July is a fun holiday as long as everyone stays safe. This truth also includes your dog. You probably already know to keep him clear of the fireworks. However, fireworks aren’t the only thing that can harm him on this holiday. Below are a few other things you should consider too in order to keep him safe. Just:

1- Store your lighter fluid.

The smell of lighter fluid, lit matches and citronella candles will attract your dog. Unfortunately, if he ingests any of these things, he will get sick. Be safe and store these items away soon after you use them or place them up high away from your dog’s reach.

2- Don’t give out scraps.

It is tempting to feed your dog all of the extra scraps from the ribs, chicken or hot dogs you’ll be barbecuing on the 4th of July. However, this temptation can hurt you dog’s stomach and lead to diarrhea and indigestion. Try to stick with your dog’s usual diet – even if he begs you for a piece of meat.

3- Monitor the noise level.

If you like to party-hardy on the 4th of July and things tend to get noisy; you may want to prepare a quiet, safe place for your dog. Depending on his breed, loud noises may shock his system and illicit a lot of negative behavior. So, put him in a back room away from all of the noise or let him stay over at a quiet, relative’s house.

4- Set up a cool, sheltered area.

July is one of the hottest months of the year. Don’t make your dog suffer through a long hot day without any relief. Just like you, he can suffer a heat stroke and become ill or die. Therefore, help him stay safe by setting up a cool sheltered area he can go to in your backyard and bring him inside if it gets too hot. Offer him the same type of protection from the heat you’d give a child or yourself.

5- Be mindful of guests under 19.

Teens and children who are guests in your house may not know how to play with your dog. As a result, it’s important to watch how they interact with him on the 4th of July. If you see rough housing or things going on that agitate your dog, intervene. You don’t want a holiday to turn into a fiasco because of a dog bite started by inappropriate play.

These are just a few things you can do to care for your dog on the 4th of July. Do them and he’ll be safe and happy as you celebrate our nation’s independence.
