Bill Clinton and Buddy (phot Wikipedia/Vinditas)

Based on the history of the prior presidents who have graced the White House, it’s no wonder that Obama is getting a dog. Dogs have been a mainstay in the White House for generations. Below is a list of a few presidents we know well and the canines they kept by their side.

LYNDON B. JOHNSON

This former president had a horde of dogs. Him and Her (Beagles) along with Yuki (mongrel dog) were the most famous. Johnson took several photos with them. One of the photos caused public outrage because it showed him holding up Him by his ears.

RICHARD NIXON

Nixon owned an array of dogs. He had a Poodle (Vicky), Yorkshire Terrier (Pasha), Irish Setter (King Timahoe) and an American Cocker Spaniel (Checkers). Checkers was the most famous of Nixon’s dogs because he was used in a speech. It was one in which he denied the illegal acceptance of money and gifts.

JIMMY CARTER

This Georgia born president had a dog named after a favorite southern dish - Grits. Grits was a mixed breed dog given to his daughter Amy by a teacher. Unlike other presidential dogs, Grits didn’t make a huge impression on the president because he was returned later on.

BILL CLINTON

This popular president owned a chocolate-brown Labrador Retriever named Buddy. Buddy was named after Bill’s late uncle, which shows the sentimental side of this former president. Sadly, a car hit Buddy in 2002. So, his life on this earth was short, but sweet.

GEORGE W. BUSH

Bush had two terriers (Barney and Miss Beazley) and an English Springer Spaniel (Spot) during his reign. The most well known of his trio is Barney. He’s the one that made holiday videos and also bit a reporter.

Well, it will be interesting to see what the historians will say about Obama’s future dog. So far, we know it will be a lot about the anticipation of the selection. Everything else will depend on what happens when he graces the White House.
