On the November 7 airing of Saturday Night Live (SNL), producers poked fun at singer Sara McLachlan and The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Specifically, they joked about her commercials with this group in regards to dogs calling them creepy. Of course, the skit garnered a lot of laughs, but also elicited a big question. Do ASPCA commercials go too far trying to prove a point?
In general, we all know that there are animals suffering from abuse all over the world. The only issue is what to do about it. Should the government push for tougher laws to punish the evil-doers? Or, maybe more education should be brought to young children in schools to teach them how to care for animals? No one really knows what one or even two ideas will work. What most people can agree on is that after seeing a longer than usual commercial that flashes the marred and mangled bodies of a several dogs, it can be too much. The temptation is to change the channel instead of donating money. So, maybe the hee hee haw haw skit from SNL really brought across a point that the ASPCA needs to think about in their future commercials.
What will happen next because of this SNL skit will be interesting to see. This show definitely makes the news a lot with their political views. Therefore, it won’t come as a big surprise if the ASPCA switches gears. However, for now, we all have a really funny SNL skit to watch over and over again until the next provocative one is created by this show.
