Bailey is a registered therapy dog with a unique gift. What is it? He teaches kids how to read.
Now, of course, Bailey doesn’t actually read himself. Instead, he visits local libraries and schools in the West Virginia area, sits quietly and allows children to read to him. What he does works because the children just learning how to read often feel intimidated by adults or their peers. Yet, with Bailey, they feel comfortable - free.
Kathy Klotz, the directory of Intermountain Therapy Animals, runs the program Bailey is a part of. It is called R.E.A.D., which is an acronym for Reading Education Assistance Dogs. Klotz admits that the program is working better than she thought. However, it thrives on the deep connection between dog and man.
