Whether you’re a long-time vegetarian or die-hard meat-eater, the DC VegFest on Sat., Sept 12 has something for everyone—from dynamic speakers and educational booths on animal advocacy, nutrition, and environmental concerns to cooking demos and free food samples and so much more.
This free outdoor festival, organized by Compassion Over Killing and the Vegetarian Society of D.C. is the first vegetarian celebration of its kind in the nation’s capital in more than five years—and it’s expected to draw a crowd of at least 1,000.
It’s even been recognized by D.C’s Mayor Adrian Fenty in a letter of greetings in which he states: “Several nonprofits are hosting this event to give our citizens the opportunity to learn more about making healthy food choices. I thank the participants for your commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles.”
Hosted on the University Yard at George Washington University in downtown D.C., this star-studded event features speakers including Rory Freedman, co-author of the New York Times best-seller Skinny Bitch, Kenneth Williams, an award-winning vegan body builder, and Dr. Michael Greger, a nutrition and public health expert from the Humane Society of the United States. Local celebrities include NBC-4 anchor and founder of the popular "Going Green" segment Wendy Rieger, and Maryland State Senator Jamie Raskin.
In addition to discovering many of the benefits of a vegetarian diet, festival-goers will have the opportunity to explore the many flavors of meatless cuisine. Several metro-area eateries, including Sticky Fingers Bakery, Java Green, Nirvana, Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant and Amsterdam Falafelshop, are setting up shop on the University Yard, dishing out an array of meat-, egg-, and dairy-free fare. The DC VegFest will also feature Baltimore-based Emily’s Desserts as well as Pennsylvania-based Vegan Treats.
This event is free and open to everyone (including dogs)—and the first 400 attendees who stop by the DC VegFest info booth will receive a free commemorative bag filled with recipes, coupons, and free vegan food samples. Be sure to mark your calendar, and check out www.DCVegFest.com for more details.
