
Federal officials announced today that E.coli contributed to a death in New York State. Twenty-eight cases of E. coli contamination resulting in sickness, including 2 deaths, have been reported mostly in New England, triggering a recall of beef distributed to and sold by local Philadelphia area markets.
Fairbank Farms, an Ashville, New York producer, recalled more than a half million pounds of fresh ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service.
According to the USDA website, E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, kidney failure.
The recall is rated Class I, which the USDA defines as its most serious category: “This is a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
The markets affected in the Philadelphia area include:
Acme Markets - Acme Markets Lancaster Brand meats which are potentially affected include:
• 1-pound trays of "Lancaster Brand 96/4 extra lean ground beef."
• 1- and 2-pound trays of "Lancaster Brand 90/10 Ground Beef."
• 1-pound trays of "Wild Harvest Natural 85/15 Angus Ground Beef."
Trader Joe’s has recalled beef sold only in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware stores as well as in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland, District of Columbia, North Carolina and Virginia as part of a plant-wide recall. Trader Joes’s website refers to the recall as “an extreme precautionary measure.” The company claims that all tests conducted indicate that although the following items are safe for consumption, they are nevertheless being recalled:
• Trader Joe’s 85/15 Ground Beef, sku 90403 (Sell by Dates Oct 6 and 7, 2009 only)
• Trader Joe’s 80/20 Ground Beef , sku 90404 (Sell by Dates Oct 6 and 7, 2009 only)
• Trader Joe’s 99/4 Ground Beef Patty, sku 90405 (Sell by Dates Sept 27 and 28, 2009 only)
• Trader Joe’s 85/15 Ground Beef Patty, sku 90406 (Sell by Dates Sept 27 and 28, 2009 only)
Price Chopper stores in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York and Vermont may have received contaminated meat. Products recalled are:
• 1- and 2.5-pound trays of "Price Chopper Meatloaf & Meatball Mix."
• 1-pound trays of "Price Chopper Extra Lean Ground Beef 96/4."
• 1-pound trays of "Price Chopper Fresh Ground Beef Chuck For Chili 80% Lean 20% Fat."
Giant - According to Giant’s website, ground beef sold in Giant Food stores in Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and the District of Columbia was not affected by the recall. In all other states, the following have been recalled:
• 1-pound trays of "Giant Extra Lean Ground Beef 96/4."
• 1-pound trays of "Giant Meatloaf & Meatball Mix."
• 1-pound trays of "Giant Nature's Promise Ground Beef."
• 1-pound trays of "Giant Nature's Promise Ground Beef Patties."
B.J.’s - Recalled products are:
• 5-pound trays of "Fresh Ground Beef, Contains 15 % Fat" patties.
• 3- and 5-pound trays of "Lean Ground Beef, Contains 7% Fat."
• 2.5-pound trays of "Meatloaf & Meatball Mix.
Each package bears the establishment number "EST. 492" inside the USDA mark of inspection or on the nutrition label. These products were packaged on September 15 and 16, 2009, and may have been labeled at the retail stores with a sell-by date from September 19 through 28, 2009.
Symptoms of E. coli sickness include sudden onset of severe stomach cramps and abdominal pain, followed within 24 hours by watery diarrhea that often becomes bloody. Fever, nausea and vomiting may also be experienced. Severe kidney problems may occur after a few days. Very young children, seniors and persons with weak immune systems are the most susceptible to E. coli and may experience the most severe symptoms.
