Sweet Potato Thai and German Beef with Mushroom Paradise pot pies

Who says convenience foods can't be healthy, comforting or exciting?  When I read about the pies at Pot Pie Paradise in Hayward, I knew I had to try them.  Owner and chef Theresia has a long history of international food preparation and a background in nutrition.

Theresia prepares her meat, vegan and vegetarian pies with fresh ingredients then freezes them.  For a small price increase you can buy a hot pie and even have a sit-down meal.

If I lived closer I might do that.  Since my pies were shipped, they arrived frozen.  It only took one day for the pies to arrive and they were well-packaged.

Who doesn't enjoy the mouth-watering smell of pies as they bake?  I know I did, as did my roommates.  We decided to have a taste test of the four different pies we received.

Three of us ate the German Beef and Mushroom, Classic American Chicken and Roma Vegetarian.  Two of us ate the Sweet Potato Thai.  One roommate with a sensitive stomach said it smelled too spicy to try.

This is how we rated the four pies:

German Beef and Mushroom

  1. 3 stars, my favorite, not fond of mushrooms but it tied well together
  2. 2 stars, was a little weird having noodles in a pie
  3. 3 stars, unexpected filling, and tasty

Sweet Potato Thai

  1. 1 star, spicy
  2. 1 star, spicy for my taste

Classic American Chicken

  1. 2 stars
  2. 1 star, didn't taste like classic chicken pie
  3. 3 stars, very fresh, would be perfect without potatoes

Roma Vegetarian

  1. 4 stars, good, my favorite, tastes like spaghetti
  2. 2 stars, good
  3. 4 stars, surprisingly my favorite, very good combination of flavors

I was impressed.  The Paradise pies we tasted had the flavor of each of the countries they represented.  Now I can't wait to taste their fruit pies!
