Mentioning that the Obama administration's idea to lengthen the school year caused a bit of a stir. Comments were aggressive and spirited to say the least. The critics have forecast financial devastation.
"Critics say the president's call for a longer academic calendar and a shorter summer vacation will bring on a host of unintended consequences -- including increased costs for school systems, major cuts to the nation's hotel and tourism industries, and a serious blow to summer camp operators."
That's all well and good, but it is a bit concerning when the reason to not have more school is that a hotel will make less money.
Let's face it, schools are messed up as they were long before Obama became President. We need sweeping changes, but no on is going to allow sweeping changes for fear of disturbing the status quo. The president is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. One thing is for sure though. We can "threaten" the vacation industry now, or destroy the entire economy later when students can't compete with the rest of the world.
